What is GILT?
GILT, explained: four steps to going global
Globalization, internationalization, localization, and translation build on one another. Get them in the right order and every new market costs less than the last.
-
Step 1
Globalization
The business strategy for operating in many markets: which countries, which languages, and in what order.
In practice: Choosing markets, budgets, and the content each one needs.
-
Step 2
Internationalization
Preparing a product and its content so they can be adapted without rework.
In practice: Text kept out of code, Unicode support, flexible layouts, and local date, number, and currency formats.
-
Step 3
Localization
Adapting a product, site, or message so it feels made for each market.
In practice: Translated interfaces, local formats, cultural adaptation, and testing in context.
-
Step 4
Translation
Rendering words accurately and fluently in another language.
In practice: Professional linguists, your glossary, and an independent review.
Most localization cost comes from skipped steps. When a product was never internationalized, every language repeats the same engineering fixes. We help you get the foundation right once.

- Prepare for localizationWe advise your team on internationalization: text kept out of code, Unicode, flexible layouts, and local formats.
- Build language assetsA glossary, style guide, and translation memory, so your brand sounds the same everywhere.
- Translate and adaptProfessional linguists translate, review, and adapt content and visuals for each market.
- Test in contextLinguistic and functional testing on the real product, page, course, or layout.
- Launch and keep in syncNew and changed content flows through the same process, so no language falls behind.

What is the difference between translation and localization?
Translation renders words accurately in another language. Localization adapts the whole experience for a market: the language plus formats, layouts, images, cultural references, legal requirements, and the way people search and buy. A translated product can still feel foreign; a localized one feels made for its audience. Most launches need both.
What does GILT stand for?
GILT stands for globalization, internationalization, localization, and translation. Globalization is the business strategy for operating in many markets. Internationalization prepares a product so it can be adapted without rework. Localization adapts it for each market. Translation renders the words. Each step makes the next one faster and less expensive.
What is internationalization, and why does it matter?
Internationalization, often shortened to i18n, is designing a product and its content so they can be localized without engineering changes for each language. It covers keeping text out of code, supporting Unicode and right-to-left scripts, allowing room for longer text, and handling local dates, numbers, and currencies. Without it, every new language repeats the same fixes, which adds cost and delays launches.
Which content should we localize first?
Start with the content that drives decisions and support in your new market: your product interface, key website pages, pricing and checkout, onboarding, and the help articles customers use most. Legal and regulatory content may also be required before launch. We help you prioritize so you launch with what matters and add the rest over time.
How do we choose which languages and markets to launch in?
Look at where demand already exists, such as website traffic, sales inquiries, and support requests, along with market size, competition, and regulatory requirements. Some markets need regional variants, such as Spanish for the U.S. versus Spain or French for Canada versus France. We can review your data and recommend a phased language plan.
How much do localization services cost?
Cost depends on the amount of content, the number of languages, the type of work (translation, transcreation, voiceover, engineering, or layout), how much can be reused from translation memory, and testing requirements. Combining services into one program reduces cost through shared glossaries, translation memory, and project management. Send us your content and target markets for a firm quote.
How do you keep localized content up to date?
Through continuous localization. New and changed content from your product, website, or courses flows through the same process, using your translation memory and glossary, so you only pay for what changed and every language stays current with the source.
Do you use machine translation?
Yes, where it fits. Machine translation with review by professional linguists works well for high-volume, lower-risk content such as large knowledge bases. Customer-facing, regulated, and creative content is translated or fully reviewed by professional linguists. We recommend the right approach for each type of content.
How do you ensure quality across many languages?
Every project follows our ISO 17100 certified translation process, with qualified linguists and independent review. Shared glossaries, style guides, and translation memory keep terminology consistent, and we test localized products, sites, and courses in context before launch.
Tell us what’s at stake. We’ll show you how we’d handle it.
